Rock House offers charming country house accommodation in Co Mayo, Ireland with fly fishing for salmon and sea trout available on the Owenduff and Bellaveeny rivers - guests can fish the entire top section of the Owenduff River as well as several trout lakes where there are good runs of salmon and sea trout.
Rock House is a delightful 1820s lodge on a 30,000 acre sporting estate in north Mayo, one of the wildest and most unspoilt regions of Ireland. French-owned and with a French chef, Rock House offers great food, simple but pleasant accommodation and a charming atmosphere.
The house is surrounded by twenty acres of mature parkland, featuring a number of exotic tree species. This contrasts perfectly with the stark beauty of the barren, mountainous landscape that is so characteristic of this region.
For non-fishers, there is plenty of hill-walking, including the Bangor Trail. Within easy reach, there are the many beautiful beaches of Achill and Mulranny and the new links golf course at Carne, as well as other courses in Westport and Ballina.
Snipe & woodcock shooting parties are also organised in the winter months. The house is open all year except February.
The Fishing
Rock House owns the top section of the famous Owenduff River and all of the Bellaveeny River, as well as several trout lakes.
The Owenduff is a mighty little spate river that produces hundreds of salmon and a good few sea trout each year. In some years many spring salmon are taken and there is a good grilse run. Rock House’s section runs for some four miles and can comfortably accommodate four to five rods. It has lots of different pools and glides and offers a real wilderness fishing experience.
The Ballaveeny is well known for its sea trout, the biggest of which might reach five pounds in weight, with many in the two to three pound range. It may be fished by two rods with flies or light spinning tackle.
